Which roofing service fits your job
Every service below is arranged through independent local roofing contractors who work in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. The inspection and written quote are free. If your job does not fit neatly under one heading, that is normal: a tile to metal conversion is also a re-roof, and most asbestos jobs end in a new Colorbond roof.
When something has gone wrong
- Roof repairs: leaks, cracked or slipped tiles, ridge capping, rusted laps, failed flashings, blocked valleys and storm damage on any roof type.
When the roof has reached the end
- Roof replacement: the whole roof rebuilt from the rafters up, including battens, sarking, flashings and usually gutters.
- Re-roofing: a new covering on a frame that is still sound, often the most cost-effective path for older steel roofs.
- Metal roof replacement: old galvanised iron, zincalume or painted steel roofs replaced, with the steel grade chosen for your distance from the coast.
When you want a different roof
- Tile to metal roof conversion: heavy concrete or terracotta tiles swapped for lightweight steel.
- Colorbond roofing: pre-painted steel for new roofs, re-roofs and extensions.
When the roof needs specialist handling
- Asbestos roof replacement: asbestos cement roofs removed by a licensed removalist, then re-roofed.
- Slate roof replacement: natural slate repaired, re-laid or replaced, with heritage requirements checked first.
- Commercial roofing: shops, workshops, units and strata buildings, including box gutters and low-pitch roofs.
How the inspection works
A contractor books a time with you, gets onto the roof where it is safe to do so, and looks at the covering, ridges, valleys, flashings, gutters and penetrations such as flues, vents and skylights. Where there is safe access, they will also look inside the roof space for daylight, water stains, damp insulation and the condition of the battens. You should get photos of anything they are recommending you pay for.
The quote should arrive in writing, itemised, with the materials named. If it does not, ask for it. For planning figures before the visit, see the 2026 cost guide, and for what to check when comparing contractors, read how to choose a roofing contractor in Newcastle.
